Performing Venues : Historic Playmakers Theatre
This Greek Revival temple is considered to be one of the masterworks of New York architect Alexander Jackson Davis. He designed the building as an unlikely combination library and ballroom; later it was used for agricultural chemistry and law. Built in 1850, the building was converted to a theatre in 1923. For many years, it was the theatre of the Carolina Playmakers, who were largely responsible for developing folk drama in the United States.
On December 14, 2005 an architectural firm was selected to restore the interior of Historic Playmakers Theatre. The theatre will be restored to the proscenium format in which it existed when it was named a National Historical Landmark and dedicated, in perpetuity, as the home of the Carolina Playmakers.
